Phu Quoc is well known for the colorful coral reefs, white sand shores and beatiful beach resorts, but not many people know that 2/3 of Phu Quoc is coverd by primary forest. Many places in the island are pristine and undiscovered. One of them, Hon Mot Island is a mysterious land that you shoud visit when you travel to Phu Quoc.

Hon Mot Island is located in Bai Thom just south of Bai Thom Village and north of the road that takes you to the Da Chong Ferry Terminal. There are two roads to get to Hon Mot: Either go along Nguyen Trung Truc Street, Duong Dong – Bai Thom or start from Duong Dong to Ham Ninh, then along the red dirt road to get to Hon Mot island.

Connected to Phu Quoc by a perilous bridge, tiny Hon Mot Island is home to a park with a nature trail running around its perimeter. There’s not a lot to do on the island, but the views back to Phu Quoc are exceptional.

The most exciting thing about Hon Mot island is reaching it. You have to cross the water by balancing on a moderately long “bridge” of two skinny logs tied together. There’s a hand rail (also homemade), but making it across the bridge requires a bit of dexterity. You can still experience the very interesting feeling of walking on the sea. The sea water is very shallow and cool.

Once you’re on the other side, you can relax. And actually, that’s about all you can do. Hon Mot is a place for picnics and hanging out. We saw a few Vietnamese families spread out on blankets, with coolers of beer and portable grills. On the island you will find a snack bar, a small trail that goes around the island, and a few picnic areas. Surrounding the island is a scattered patch of coral that is perfect for snorkeling.

The northeast is Phu Quoc’s most undeveloped corner, and from the rocky shore of Hon Mot, you can appreciate just how beautiful the island is when left to its own devices. These views are the best reason to make a detour to the island… but otherwise, if you’re not already passing by, it’s hard to recommend making a special effort.

From Hon Mot island, you can see very clearly the territory of Cambodia. The distance to Cambodia is just about 4, 5 knots. In Hon Mot, the sand is not white as that of Sao beach but the clarity of the sea water is equal to that of anywhere around the island of Phu Quoc. The first impressive thing here is that you will see beach morning glory rising on the ground and feel as if you are lost in a world completely different from the surrounding, filled with green color.

Along the only paved road, Hon Mot has been built small huts for camping without the fear of being disturbed by anyone. Beach morning glory covers walkway. Beach morning glory can grow as much as this is an area where originated the legend of this fragile purple flower. Covering Hon Mot is a rich flora with green shady perennial trees forming many beautiful shapes, as if you are lost in a fairy forest area. Diverse vegetation adorns Mot islet more interesting and mysterious.

Peaceful setting, cool atmosphere is well suitable for those looking for a truly private place. Both forest and ocean are available to explore. Hon Mot island is almost disengaged from everything outside. It is not noisy, not dusty and really wild as a desert island. The art scene is also available for those who love photography to spawn creativity or couples to want to keep the beautiful moments before the wedding. With a quite beach, the tourists coming here are free to swimming and diving.

Coming to Hon Mot Island, you should prepare food and water for camping all day. If you forget, you can visit the nearby Thom beach to buy seafood or chicken to organize a barbecue with friends and relatives.
